ECYB Encourages Girls to Play Baseball
Calling All Girls to Play and Umpire!Updated Wednesday October 26, 2016 by El Cerrito Youth Baseball.
El Cerrito Youth Baseball has a proud tradition of having girls playing baseball alongside boys on equal footing, challenging the widely held notion that girls should play softball not hard ball. We have girls playing from the Shetland through Bronco divisions, who have shown that they can pitch, field, and hit with the boys. Over the past two years, we have had three girls on our select and all-star teams. Several participated in a local girl’s all-star program this summer.
Last year, we had thirteen girls play in ECYB. Three out of six Shetland teams had girls, two out of seven Pinto teams had girls, two out of seven Mustang teams had girls, and one out of eight Bronco teams had a girl on the roster. We hope to attract more girls at the youngest level and keep them playing as long as possible. More girls should play the game that we all love.
We think that we can do a better job to encourage more participation by girls. The league will do more extensive outreach this year and make our marketing materials more attractive to girls. We ask everyone support their participation. It is not easy for them.
More women need to step up as leaders. We only had one female manager and two female coaches last year. The number of women on the board of directors is expected to increase to five by this spring, but we would like more volunteers. We have one girl in our youth umpire program and hope to recruit more.
Player registration will open in early October. Umpire registration will open in December.

We welcome your help and feedback in making ECYB open to everyone. Thanks.
