Bat Rules Changing in 2018

Updated Saturday February 11, 2017 by El Cerrito Youth Baseball.

Please be advised that the current generation of youth baseball bats will become illegal in PONY league play by the end of next year.  You may want to consider this rule change before investing in any expensive new bat as a holiday gift.

Starting in the 2018 season, PONY, Little League, and other youth baseball organizations are implementing a new bat standard adopted by the USA Amateur Federation. We currently use bats meeting the BPF 1.15 standard.  BPF is used to measure the bounce off the bat.  However, a new standard is replacing BPF.  The new standards are not driven by safety concerns but an intent to limit the performance of aluminum bats to be comparable to the highest quality wood bats.  New bats may not be available until fall 2017.

Existing bats may be used through the end of the 2017 calendar year.  After that point, national PONY rules will require bats to meet the new standard and carry a USA Bat Licensing Stamp.  We will keep you posted as we receive more information.
